Queer Diary + School Disco at Rich Mix

Transgender Pride, Bisexual Pride, Lesbian Pride, Gay Pride, Queer Pride, Youth Pride, Asexual and Aromantic Pride

Event Overview

Queer Diary, the only live teenage diary reading evening for the LGBTQIA+ community, has announced their biggest event yet, Queer Diary + School Disco at Rich Mix this May. LGBTQIA+ adults are invited to read extracts from their teenage diaries to a live audience, in the spirit of celebration, solidarity and silliness. Through sharing real teenage journal entries, love-letters, poetry, and fanfiction, Queer Diary brings together LGBTQIA+ people of a wide range of ages, identities, and backgrounds.

In June, Queer Diary host Beth Watson will present: Hasbian, a comedy about coming out as a lesbian, only to discover that boys are also appealing. Hasbian uses Beth’s real teenage diaries, music, and animated projections of teen-movie actors from the noughties to tell a story of growing up queer in Brighton under Section 28, the 1988 – 2003 law prohibiting the “teaching of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”. Showing at Clapham Omnibus 25th-29th June.

f you have questions, or access requirements you’d like to speak to us about, please contact: Rich Mix at [email protected] and Queer Diary organisers Josie & Beth at [email protected].

Diary readers are asked to self-describe, for any blind or visually impaired audience members, and give warnings for any potentially sensitive content.

Due to the open-mic nature of this event, material cannot always be ‘vetted’ by organisers in advance. We ask everyone volunteering to read to consider the wellbeing of themself and others, when deciding what to share on stage.

BSL Interpreters will be booked to interpret all readings from the stage.

Seating is unreserved as standard. Please let us know in advance if you would like us to reserve a seat, and if you have any specific access requirements we can accommodate in doing so (ie, near the front, near the exit, near BSL Interpreters, etc).
